The field of battle. Virtual Oldhammer fun!

Tonight I'm going to GM what I hope will be the first of many online virtual table top games of Oldhammer at Erny's place. I always found that, although I love club gaming my best experiences were with friends over someones place, that's the feel I hoped to capture with my blog hence the name. I'm really pleased to actually be able to invite people over how ever virtually, shame I can't offer beer and snacks.

Anyway I thought as a bit of fun I'd present the battle ground to you, this is worked up from pdfs and 3d modles and I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out. Soon orcs and dwarves will be fighting across this landscape and thats where other oldhammerers come in.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on where this is, why is there a road going through the middle of it? What is the forest on the left? Why are these two forces fighting here? Hopefully soemthing will spark my imagination and we'll have a great story behind this test battle.

  1. Grishnack Bloodaxe has been deforesting this area for months now (that's why they call him the Bloodaxe) to provide domestic fuel, building materials and fuel for his forge to make the crude pig iron of the Orcs. The lonely wood is barely more than a copse these days. Grishnack needs all this timber to expand his village 'Scabby Rump', which has doubled in population recently. Apparently there is a nearby Dwarf settlement who are a bit 'grumpy' (geddit) at losing out on the timber they need to make charcoal for their own forges, but Grishnack will look forward to fighting those stunties if they dare challenge him. They used to have a few tree-cutter families at one end of Plank Street and the Stronghold at the other, but Grishnack burnt them out (and cut off a few beards) just as he intends to burn out the Stronghold one day.

    1. Wonderful, this is what oldhammer is about, playing a game and making stuff up about it. Great stuff like this.

  2. Damn, how can I follow that? I was going to make a suggestion but I really think there's no point. That's your winner right there Erny. Not just plausible, but very very old school and very, very Warhammer. Not just your basic "cos Orcs and dwarfs hate each other" motivation either,

    1. I know! He even took the names I put on the army list I sent him and ran with them too, I had no idea of the village of Scabby Rump when I called the Arrer Boys the Scabby Rump Boys, it all make sense now!

So good I may have to copy it and delete the post so I actually hear some of the other suggestions...

Making me feel bad I self censored the dwarven hero's name.

    2. Would that be old Cnut Axe Cleaver you're referring to there ;)

Actually the Orcs only have it half right (as usual). The nearby Dwarf settlement of Axwoon'd was built up around a small cooperage that serviced all the good local Dwarven breweries. The loss of all that good oak timber to the Orcs' vandalism has unsurprisingly got the Dwarves' back up.

Do not get between a stunty and his pint...

  3. Great game tonight by the way - definitely felt like being round Erny's place.

We may not have been able to share the snacks but we could hear them ;)
