Merry Orcmas, we have an Orctober winner!

Ho, Ho Waghhh! I bring Orcmas cheer. Not only have i cunningly managed to combine my favourite fantasy tribe with my favourite time of the year I also have a prize winner drawn randomly from all this years orctober entries...

And the winner is.....

The draw may be random but this is definitely a worthy winner such awesome paining on a great selection of figures. I love the flamer ork in denim overalls the original ork with auto cannon, the wonderful green skin tones and general attention to detail.

Well done Mr P. do let me know which of the prizes on offer you would like.

And finally Merry Christmas to everyone. Here's dreaming of a green Christmas.

Wrapping Orctober up for Christmas!

OK what are the usual excuses, you've heard them all before from a million bloggers, they are all true for sure and blahh, blahhh blahh. I haven't posted in ages and I should have. So I'm determined to get the final entries for orctober which technically finished a month late in November and yet hasn't been rounded up till the end of December.

Good job there were so many cool orcy projects to distract you from my tardiness.

First to have a look at everything that I haven't yet covered here, and here (two months ago!)

Mr Mouse brought us another wonderful offering in the shape of the Bad Moon Boyz.

A great version of a classic unit and an awesome bit of orcy fiction to go with them.

Sean added another entry with some 20mm orcs. Little guys loads of character.  My 20mm plastics never looked this good.

Riotville had a squigg, a grot and a drummer to add.

A riot of colour again sir, nice figure, well painted.

Mr Papafakis had some ork boyz for us. Classic RT boyz, a mix of the boxed set boyz and others there is some really great painting here and top notch bases.

Bane gave us a great orc warband designed using my own generator. What can I say about the warband, seeing is believing I guess.

Over on the forum there were more good things too:

Jeff had some of Ruglud's finest for us, way brighter than my own and with his distinctive shields.

But wait that wasn't enough and we also got more, que the daily rate boyz.

We must be getting close to an army shot now Jeff.

Paul/Golgfag1 had even more early citadel goodness in his usual vast quantities:

Lord Chaotl Oml painted a spiffing shaman, I've always loved this miniature especially when well painted as here.

BulldogLopez has an awesome slice of monowheel ork zooming out way. I love the pink ears.

And last but not least Blacksmith finished off his warband, a little late but he had already submitted an entry and who am I to judge. Anyway a super 90's look orc Mordheim band.

So that's all the entries. I want to say thanks to everyone that joined in, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Honestly, I may not have gotten round to posting this last round up till now but I did read and/or drool over every entry as they were posted up.

What was that? A prize? Oh yes a prize, I'm goign to play Father Orcmas and wait until the night of the 24th to pick the winner out of my gofaster red hat. Merry Orcmas!

Ruglud's Armoured Orcs - The Spike-Can Commandos

So a month after orctober finished here is my finished project for the celebration of all that is orc: Ruglud's Armoured Orcs - The Spike-Can Commandos.

I tried to tread the middle path between doing a direct homage to the original paint scheme from the box and painting them to fit with my own orcs.

Here is the front row arranged with a frontage of six. I ty was important to me to use the Arcane armorials for the shields  as these really are part of the original look and they fit in so well with the spike can commandos' back story. Another part of the story is the fact they wear plundered chaos armour so I have given a few of the pieces a nice green ink wash. Present on the originals but not as strong.

The next row shows even more shield designs, these are the original transferes scanned and printed onto sticky paper, then painted over the top. original post on this here, I can't believe this was in 2012!
I have used my own orc skin tones and usual basing form my orc army but I believe they enough like the original paint jobs to show I tired.

The back row, I've used the same shield designs as on the original box, though not the same doubles out of preference.

From above the games eye view. The original box had seventeen of the commandos, I have hundreds of these guys so i may paint up a few more.

One of my favourite figures is the musician/shaman  Bambrag. And I've just noticed a big splodge of brown on the troopers shoulder from highlighting the crossbow. How embarrassing.

Rudlug and Gudruck Bonechewer. I get confused between the two. In the story, Rudlug manages to get his helmet stuck on his head like the orc with the two handed sword but in the stats write up Rudlug has two hand weapons. I've always used the two hand weapons orc as Rudlug but where is his helmet!

Knovember Knights, part deux.

After hosting the guys from OGRE in my kitchen I'm just getting the house ship shape before the Mrs and kids get back home but thought a quick post of how my Knights turned out after two nights of painting. I'm pretty pleased and if I get some time later I'll detail how they fared.

Oh and thanks for the great evening of oldhammer guys.

Knovember Knights and Orctober Knews.

This Saturday Erny's place will be hosting one of  OGRE's occasional gaming get togethers. The plan is to play about with some Knights.  Based upon the Combat of the Thirty I need to get some dismounted Knights painted up sharpish. Left over from when they first came out and with a few collected later I have a good number of the Perry early 1990's mounted knights but very few of the foot knights. Never fear about ten years ago I got a tonne of Black Tree designs very nice Knights. Huge lead mountains have their advantages as I don't have to wait fro the post, man to call just get painting. Her are a few to paint up including a couple of citadels in the mix.

Just three evenings to sort these out now I've based and undercoated them. Included is one of the very nice mounted knights I mentioned earlier. Apparently we may be doing some jousting.

I suspect others will be bringing knights from other time periods but I do like the harness from the early part of the 100 years war and it would be about right for the Combat of the Thirty which is about the middle of the period. Hopefully we aren't being to historic and this is a warhammer version.

It does mean my Orcs for Orctober have yet to be finished so I intend to get things wrapped up for that by the weekend. If you plan to enter the prize draw make sure you have a post up by then!

Orctober prizes

So I said I was going to offer the winner of this years orctober prize draw a choice of prize and I've finally dug out the bits I want to offer. As I still haven't got my orctober unit painted entries are still open and all you need to do is post your entry on this blog somewhere (at the bottom here would do) or on the oldhammer forum thread.

So ten plastic fantasy regiments orcs, for those that don't like painting with a shield stuck on these are usable, for those that do who can't resist a classic unit to paint up.

These two photos show one prize option, nineteen plastic fantasy regiments stikkas with a lead goblin to lead them. I happened to read some comments complaining about the price of goblin bows these days, well here is a whole unit of them, enough to meet the WHA list requirements if you like sticking to lists.

I figured I should make one option 40K so here are some classic plastic Orks in need of some love, original weapons including a plasma pistol. I must be mad.

Anyway on to finishing my boyz so I can pick a winner.

Auktober?

OK I've gone and done it again.  Run out of time in Orctober, this time the half term at home with the kids (and my paints) turned out to be a half term in Suffolk with the kids and no paint. Bame the wife.

We did go to Framlingham Castle which is always good, a first time for my boys too.

I read Lamentations, C. J. Sansoms 2014 historical crime novel from front to back. It's a good bit of fun set in the final months of Henry VIII's reign. It has really put me in the mood for some WHFRP.

But no little orcs to be held in my hand. But thanks to my Brother in law and intrepid world wide birder extrodinare I did witness the saving of a Little Auk. Not rare at sea these little birds are rare in land, even on the coast. My eldest son is bird mad so was over the moon to see this Orc, erm Auk transported safely back to the sea. Until they get out of the surf they can be prey to herring gulls a few of which were buzzing about but readers will be happy to know that Gauk and Mauk looked kindly on the little fella and he was soon speeding through the deeper water out to sea.

It means my Boysz haven't been finished so I've decided to keep entries to the Orctober prize give away open until I'm done myself. I really should post up what I'm giving away this year.

Orctober another catch up.

OK time for another update, in no particular order:

Lets start with some art, from Chad at Maximum Rock and Roleplay :

Created for Ral Partha and not Orctober at all I had to ask if I could post this up for Orctober. Chad said yes so this is just one of a bunch of really great pieces. Chad has done real justice to the figures these depict (more on them lower down from Springfield) the oldschool AD&D vibe of these is just so awesome. Do go and check out Chads other stuff, you won't be disappointed.

I'm a bit jealous of how quickly he painted these to such a nice standard.

Great to see this guy painted something other than red. Urions done a really nice bunch of Characters.

Some ancient (well late 70's) Ral Partha orcs. The Blue skin is a different choice for sure but they are looking great for it, I always felt these sculpts looked a bit Roman and the Rune painted on the shields really gives these boyz a Late Roman look. Admittedly they were painted a few years ago but it's good to see them here.

Baggage trains are so ignored though I have seen a few great examples of late. This waggon  very Orcish with all the gubbins on it and the mixed crew of reprobates we also get our second short story for Orctober.

They are shaping up nicely for sure nd a cool technique with the white layers I guess washed with green.

Who doesn't like these old Marauder orcs, these are old paint jobs but look vibrant and green even today. There are lots of great units to see on his blog.

Creepy little blighters. The blue faces are a nice touch, wait, more blue green skins whats going on!

The first orc painted is stunning. I look forward to seeing the rest. Incidentally he's using the warband rules I put out last Orctober.

Nicely done, you have to go a see how Sean had him painted up until recently.

Our first battle report and it looks like so much fun. Based on Captain Crooks Death Race 40000 from BOYL15 I know how much fun it must have been, nice report from RV.

Nice subtle painting and a cool conversion on the mohawk boyz axe.

Lovely painting and a half orc I've never seen before. What a quiff.

Golfag is expanding his mighty hoard with some more Black mountain boyz:

A work in progress but we can see where he's going.

Orctober week one.

Presenting a quick roundup of Orctober 2015 week one. A little late but we've had a week and a day of Orctober now so I thought a quick round up of what has been produced so far.

Sadly no discussions about gaming, literature, art, scenarios or stories yet but a few speedy painters have finished some great models for us to gorp at and a good number of people have promised something in the future.

Finished stuff so far, blogs first:

I love the fresh 90's scheme on these foundry and blacktree sculpts. The diverse skin tones are also very nice, lets see them in one of Javier's awesome battle reports now!

Great little goblin with an awesome shield that owes a little to Blanche and to Miller. Grubby and chaotic.

Apparently this was the first figure ever painted by RV so it's an honour he stripped it and painted it up again for us. Looks great.

Part of his Thistlewood project the Lund Hobgobs look pretty mean. Their leader is actually an orc though I think he is pretending to be a Hobgoblin. I really like the glossy toy soldier look of these er.. toy soldiers.

Bulldog Lopez's Harboth.

As usual a great PJ from BL the gut plate couldn't be more late 80's GW. Really nice and clean paint yet dirty and rusty at the same time. More assorted orcs have been promised.

Laava has given us some great orc boar boys with his first post ever (well at least under that name):

A little bit pastel the unit looks super. The unusual yellow and green shields and banner work well and the boars are just great, love the ginger one. Hope to see more from Laava!

There you have it, week one. Internet points for the first written article, bit of art or even Ork for Orctober and do let me know if I've missed anything from this first week.
